Our Survey

Community Need:

In 2017, Arcadia Project conducted a survey that identified unmet cultural needs in the Staunton and Waynesboro area along with underserved communities. The survey was promoted with a postcard placed in downtown shops and gathering places. It was distributed electronically by: American Shakespeare Center, Mary Baldwin University, Staunton Downtown Development Association, and the Kettle.

Results:

Millennials in particular mention a lack of compelling offerings that make them want to remain in or relocate to the area. The survey identified some common themes: in a time where so many people are engaging digitally, respondents want ways to interact socially, in person. Members of diverse ethnicities mention a desire for varied, multicultural offerings that welcome and support dialogue and inclusion. People in their 20’s and 30’s want entertainment options in the winter. Many local creatives (both professional and hobbyist) feel siloed, and want a space where they can gather and exchange ideas, specifically, in a place that feels welcoming and inclusive. The survey also surfaced a vast number of highly skilled local individuals eager to pass along their knowledge via workshops and tutorials. Finally, some members of the community voiced uncomfortable memories of when the African American community was restricted to seating in the balcony, and were not welcome to bowl with whites when the Arcadia Building was a youth center.
